The beginnings of the castle are connected with the person of Bishop Henryk of Miśnia, who moved the seat of the diocese from Braniewo. The previous capital had to be inconveniently located, as already Henryk’s predecessor more frequently stayed in the Warmian town of Orneta than in the seat of Braniewo. Henryk of Miśnia was the head of the bishopric in 1350-1355.
